My students need chapter books and high-interest books for their age group. Having classics like the Roald Dahl books as well as newer books and biographies will prepare them for more challenging material.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our charter school is among the highest performing schools for African American students in the state, despite serving a student body that's primarily low-income. We emphasize a culture of high expectations and celebrate academic achievement, seeking to plant the notion “I will go to college” in each of our scholars early and often.
The students in my class are all East African and many are new to the country.
Despite many challenges they face as immigrants, they are enthusiastic and ready to learn! I would like for them to have the best academic experience they possibly can.
My Project
As my students transition from elementary school to middle school they need books that challenge their thinking and expand their minds. They have few opportunities to visit the city library and the classroom library is lacking in materials for their age group and reading skills.
Having access to chapter books and more rigorous text will not only expose them to new ideas, but give them the opportunity to use the reading skills they have been practicing in class.
The scholars are hungry for new literature and are anxiously awaiting the expansion of their classroom library. By donating you would be exposing students to classics such as Pippi Longstockings and James and the Giant Peach as well as new award winners like Bud Not Buddy and The One and Only Ivan.
