"Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him."
-Maya Angelou
I teach at a wonderfully quaint school built in the 1940's, nestled near the back gate of Pensacola Naval Air Station.
We serve a community of low to middle income students (over 65% of our students receive free or reduced price lunches) who come to school each day eager to learn.
My Project
This project will give my students the opportunity to compete in the Battle of the Books competition based on the Sunshine State Young Reader's Award Program (a reading motivation program for students in Florida). In order to compete in Battle of the Books, students must read the fifteen books of varied genres, take online tests, and become experts on each book before the competition. The winning district teams receive a trophy and are recognized as Battle of the Books Champions.
This set of Sunshine State Young Reader's Award books will provide my students with current quality literature, give them the opportunity to compete in the Battle of the Books competition, and foster a love of reading in the process.
