Books for At-Home Listening Project

My students need the books for the audio files that are uploaded on their mini-iPods for their at-home listening project.

My Students

My 4th and 5th grade students are yearning to read grade-level chapter books, but do not yet have the reading ability-levels to access these books. Through the At-Home Listening Project, my students will be able to access the texts that they have been waiting to read.

I teach reading intervention and have the privilege of working with some really amazing kindergarten through 5th grade students.

My students are typically two years behind grade level in reading; some are further behind. Their reading experience has primarily included reading picture books so that they can take Accelerated Reader quizzes. Few of them have ever read 'just for fun' because, typically, they cannot access the books they would read 'just for fun.' My students set academic and personal goals at the beginning of the year. Most of their academic goals were around reading chapter books. I watch them peruse their classroom libraries and our school library - looking at the chapter books, but choosing the picture books. They want to read the grade-level texts so badly. Each day I work with my groups with a huge sense of urgency. I know that if I teach with all of the heart, knowledge, and skills that I possess - my students will be able to reach their goals.

My Project

One of my previous co-workers generously donated 10 mini-iPods to my students. Along with the iPods, she uploaded many high-interest grade level texts onto my laptop (which I have since uploaded the books of my student's choice onto their individual iPods). These resources allowed me to create the At-Home Listening Project. My students can listen to grade-level chapter books on their iPods while following along with the text. This project is allowing them to read 'just for fun' and reach their goals of reading chapter books! Our school library has some of the texts that are currently downloaded, but not all of them. Also, the library is some times out of the texts that my students chose to put on their iPods. This limited availability of books has led me to ask (too many times) - "We don't have that book, what's your second choice?" I want to build our own classroom library with the texts that are uploaded on their iPods so they can always listen to the first book of their choice.

This project is going to help my students feel successful.

They watch their peers read chapter books but know that they aren't quite at that level yet. This project will allow my students to read and enjoy the books that they have been waiting so long to read! The project will also allow them to hear fluent reading with complex texts - ultimately building the reading skills that will push them towards grade-level proficiency.
