Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Books are essential to learning in an AP (advanced placement) course. Since my AP European History class is new, and funds are tight, the district can not buy anymore books for the students.
My students are inspirational!
They come from an impoverished area of California. 94% of the students in my school are Latino, 83% of them qualify for free or reduced lunch, and almost all of them are English language learners. These students deal with gang problems and all the other issues poverty brings. Despite the odds against them, they are challenging themselves to take an AP Euro course! This class is in its 4th week and the students love the rigorous and exciting content.
They attend a charter school that encourages them to be the first in their family to attend college. The school has the highest high school graduation rate of Latino students in all of its county! Their school even provides individual mentors for seniors to help them apply for scholarships and register for their freshman year of college classes. Every student is required to take an AP class once in high school, the vast majority take at least 3.
My Project
Often history is taught simply though a textbook and all the excitement of learning is somewhat lost. Since AP classes use the textbook thoroughly, having another way of mastering the content is needed. By having students learn about existentialism through this electrifying and gripping story of The Stranger, they will be amazed of what people are capable of. After reading this book, we will discuss the text in detail.
We read one book every quarter and currently my students don't read a book 4th quarter. I've funded projects on Donorschoose to get The Prince, Candide, and King Leopold's Ghost. Having The Stranger will ensure students are reading challenging content throughout the year.
The Stranger is one of the most widely read novels of the 20th century.
Books are paramount to learning in any advanced placement history course. By donating to this project, you are helping students from a disadvantaged area close the achievement gap by giving them the opportunity to pass the AP Euro test!
