This is my first year of teaching. I am working toward building a bigger classroom library. I want to build students' access to books. Reading is the best way to create life long readers, increase student achievement, and create confidence in students.
I work in a school that has students coming from low socioeconomic status.
A lot of my students have dealt with trauma and their lives. I love that these students show up to school with a smile on their face and do their best to persevere.
The students that I have met so far are excited to enter the new school year with a new teacher. Most of my students consider themselves reader, but they find it hard to find books they like. They also find it hard to have access to books they like.
These books were hand picked by my students to be put into my classroom library. Research shows that one way to increase students' learning is to incorporate more reading into their lives. This is my goal. Independent reading creates a positive environment and helps my students get excited about school. By increasing the books in my classroom, students will have more access to books they want to read.
Books are a safe place to explore scary ideas.
Books are people's ways of learning more about the world around them. These books would help us continue to build a community of readers.
