My students are overall a BRILLIANT group! We have some learning difficulties, but everyone has a great attitude and wants to improve and be the best students they can be.
We live in a rural area and my students love to learn about different people and areas through reading!
My students come from many different backgrounds but they need more engaging literature. If I could describe my students in 5 words they would be creative, empathetic, inventive, courageous and kind. In my 12 years of teaching, I have never had a group quite like this one.
I chose two class sets of books. The Story of Jackie Robinson is a story of inclusion and rising above prejudices to become one of the greatest baseball players of all times. The other book is Some Friend, Finding a friend isn't easy, especially when there aren't many kids age eleven in your neighborhood. Being a friend is even harder. It is about a girl who is "different" and has to fit in in her neighborhood.
Books send children on adventures and help them to really see what the world is like for other people.
These books will help transport them to a time when everyone didn't have such an easy time being different.
