My students need high interest lower level books to meet their current needs as struggling readers.

Hooray! This project is fully funded
Imagine being in a classroom where your peers, the same age as you, are reading and comprehending books that are 5 years above your current skill set. Many of my students are facing this reality as they begin sixth grade reading several academic years behind grade level.
My scholars attend a public, tuition free charter school and come from four different towns.
They represent a diverse range of race and socioeconomic status. While some students are reading at a high school level, recent assessments reveal that our lowest readers are struggling up to five grade levels behind their benchmark. These children desperately need books that are both accessible to them as readers and, simultaneously, interesting to them as preteens.
The Orca collection is a series of books that are perfect for my low level readers. While the text complexity is appropriate for their level, the books themselves appear mature in content and presentation. This particular collection contains sports stories which are of particular interest to some of the boys in my classroom who tend to be most resistant to our reading work this year.
Please help make sure ALL of my scholars fall in love with reading this year.
These books will provide my most struggling readers with the critical tools they need to get hooked into reading this year. Thank you!
