I am a third-grade teacher at a school that serves residents of Chicago's Cabrini-Green. As I try to instill a love of reading and learning in my students, one of the challenges I have is finding books that capture their interest and reflect their experiences. All of my students are African American, and research indicates that African American boys in particular seem to trail behind other students in their development of reading skills. I am writing this grant to acquire a collection of books for my classroom library that will especially spark the interest and sustain the interest of my boys. While all of the books I am requesting have central characters who are African American boys, all the books have themes with universal appeal; and, I expect them to also be of interest to the girls in my classroom. I have selected a variety of fiction and non-fiction books, as well as poetry. The books are at a variety of reading levels, as my students range widely in their reading skills. I will use some of the books to read aloud to my class and will make others of them available in our classroom library for students to read independently. It is my hope that by providing a wide library of books that reflect the interests, experiences, and concerns of my African American boys, they will continue to grow as readers, learning to love books as the pathway to new adventures.
