Help me give my students books to enlighten and empower. I want my students to have access to both fiction and non-fiction stories about people who look like them.

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Kindergarten is an exciting place full of active, inquisitive and creative children. My class of 22 students has a variety of interests and needs. This class is diverse in ability; many have never been to daycare or pre-k, and some are already reading and writing. They are all excited to expand their own knowledge and apply new skills while celebrating each others’ success.
Our school is located in south central Georgia and serves a community with a USAF military base and local university.
As a community, we have seen manufacturing jobs disappear as plants have closed. Many families struggle in this economic environment. They all want their children to be successful and understand the value of a quality education.
Our classroom is a place of inclusivity and empathy for everyone. We have fun while we learn the social and academic skills that will enable us to be successful in all of our future endeavors.
My Project
Providing these books will highlight African American achievements and help my students recognize the role African Americans have played in U.S. history. These books will foster engagement and allow students see themselves represented in positive, affirming texts. We will use these books not only in February, but throughout the year to meet our literacy standards of listening, speaking, and writing. Besides being academically appropriate for five year olds, these books will help me expand the experience my students have with Black history. It will not be limited to one month. I want my students to have multiple texts that can be used throughout the year.
