Village Academy is a charter school in Harlem that has celebrated two years of success and is getting geared up to start its third academic year. Our test scores from the 2004-2005 school year are higher than the average scores in New York City. Although there are many reasons for our success, we attribute higher reading scores, in part, to the insistence that our students become life-long readers. This year we are very excited to be starting the second charter school, which will be located in borrowed space on 113th Street. Leadership Village Academy will start with two fifth-grade classes and will continue to grow until it has reached a full school of grades five through twelve. I am a writing teacher and the academic dean at this school. As a start-up school, we are in need of reading material for our students. We expect our students to have, at all times, two independent reading books that are read during the day and for homework. We need any chapter books aimed at fifth-grade level in any genre. As each student has his or her own preferred reading, we would like to make our library as varied as possible. We are therefore requesting funding for four sets of a variety of books from Scholastic, including mysteries, biographies, sports books, and adventure stories. These books will get our library off to a great start.
