My students need a range of books to support the 4th grade science curriculum including The Salamander Room, The Mixed Up Chameleon, and Fossils Tell of Long Ago.
Each day we incorporate the engineering design process and quarterly we introduce new project based learning assignments to integrate subject matter making it relatable and relevant for all students.
The 4th grade team is made up of a very diverse group of students who each bring a smile to your face.
Our six classes are divided into three teams. Each team has a math and science teacher and a literacy and social studies teacher. Students vary in both ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. The students are each unique and energetic. Our school emphasizes collaborative learning so we spend time each day working in small groups with an emphasis on STEM. These STEM strategies and philosophies promote student growth and give students real world skills.
My Project
Our school does not have science text books. We encourage a hands-on approach to science. We would like to provide our students with more written resources to encourage independent learning and integrate the subject areas. 4th grade teachers will be able to integrate literacy into their science units and vice versa. Three sets (one for each 4th grade team) of thirty-nine curriculum-related (Earth materials, landforms, magnetism/electricity, and animal adaptations) children's books would be a great addition to our hands-on approach. We look forward to reading titles such as The Salamander Room (showing students the importance of each living organism and specific habitats) and The Mixed Up Chameleon (allowing students to creatively explore physical and behavioral adaptations).
It is important that even the math and science teachers integrate literacy into their lessons to foster the love of reading in their students.
With these books, our students will be able to emerge from 4th grade as knowledgeable readers from all genres.
