Books, Books, Books!
I am an avid reader and have been since I was in school. When I started teaching music, I decided that I would try to share not only my love of music, but also this love I have for reading. In the experiences I have had using books and stories, children love being read to and they are enthralled when they do other special things with what they have read. I have put on puppet shows to a story (with "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly"). I have had kids act out books (with "The Musicians of the Sun"). We have also played instruments with a story or with certain words (with "Rap a tap tap" and "The Three Little Pigs"). No matter what it is we have done, the kids respond so well to story books. They are having fun and learning at the same time. Isn't that what we always strive to achieve?
The problem is: I am almost out of books! I have used what I have, and just can't afford to buy all that I would like to use.
My proposal is for a small library of books about, or featuring, music. I would have the books available for students to explore, but I would also use the stories in my instruction with students from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade (OVER 900 STUDENTS)! With these books, the students would learn about composers, musicians, cultures, instruments, musical styles, and history.
Literacy is of great importance in schools, not only because of testing, but also because reading is an essential part of living. I hope to help children find a passion for reading by having a library of music books in the music room.
