My Students

I teach in an inner city, high poverty, public school which has the largest program in the district for children on the Autism Spectrum. We have a diverse population of students in our Special Education classrooms as well. All of our students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunches. These students face difficult situations on a daily basis, both in the classroom and in their home environment. Students in my classes come from a range of learning backgrounds, are culturally and linguistically diverse, and participate in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program.

My Project

As of now, there are books in buckets of all sizes stacked up on windowsills. The children need help searching for a book to read. Teachers are required to lift the buckets and help the children reach and find books on their reading level. The addition of bookshelves and bookcases will be a necessary feature to our new book room for leveled readers. I envision the room to have several bookcases and work toward filling each shelf with bins of more books for the children to have easy access to. My goal is for the children to love reading and become independent readers.
