Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to put this wish into writing.
Each year, as a self contained teacher, I serve 20 dedicated second graders who come from limited English and low socioeconomic backgrounds. They are eager to learn how to read and would benefit greatly from listening to new stories in English on a personal CD player. They would have unlimited access to our weekly stories on CD as well as recreational books on CD, which they can borrow from our class library. It will also give them a chance throughout the day to spend time alone listening to a book.
Many of these students share homes and bedrooms with generations of family. The time they have to quietly read or listen to a story on CD is very limited. If our classroom could have 10 of these portable devices we could take turns using them throughout the day. I would also include the CD players in a checkout system for the students so they would have the chance to take them home, along with a classroom book on CD, and share reading time with siblings at night. Research has proven time and time again how important it is for ALL children to have access to someone who can read aloud to them. These students do not readily have this chance UNLESS you can help! By granting them access to books on CD, they will have someone reading a story to them each and every night!
