All of the students at our school receive free and reduced lunch and breakfast. The bottom line is that we have awesome staff, the most incredible and resilient kids but we need more resources!
My students are bright, eager and ready to learn!
Our classroom is filled with positive energy in a sometimes seemingly negative environment.
More often than not, the students I teach are happy to be at school and many get sad before breaks and especially when leaving for summer. Remembering myself as a student, that seemed backwards to me! I quickly realized that the students of our school do not always live in safe, stable environments. We are in Flint, Michigan. Many of my students are not free to roam around their neighborhoods on bikes or even go to friends' houses. School is where they can interact with other kids, learn vital social skills, and most importantly have a consistent, stable, safe environment that will be there for them no matter what!
My students have a life full of challenges. It is my goal to give them an educational outlet to be able to come in to a safe space and have something positive and hopeful to think about at school. That is why I am asking for books and scholastic news issues that is geared toward their personal interests so they can become even more engaged and excited in reading!
I have several students who play sports and would love to be able to read about the sport that they play or maybe a sport they may want to try!
I included books based on their favorite sports players, and also famous athletes who have overcome many challenges in their lives as well. I also have several students who love animals and love to learn fun facts about animals that they don’t get to see everyday! The Scholastic News - DynaMath is ONE irresistible magazine - featuring math based nonfiction, motivating practice problems, and current world and national events all rolled into one magazine! So cool!! I also included Scholastic news for grade 2, my younger intervention students who care very much about the world around them!
