My students need nonfiction resources and picture books that will help them see things from other parts of the world. We need Manfish: A Story of Jacques Cousteau , Trapped! A Whale's Rescue and Mr. Ferris and His Wheel.
When I think about nonfiction reading, I think about reading that can introduce students to topics that they have never heard of before. I think about going to new worlds, seeing new things, and meeting new people. Our new books will do these things and more for our classroom!
Our school is located in a small, rural community in Wisconsin.
Our classroom is a Title 1 classroom. Every thirty minutes, a new group of students walks through our door. These students range from kindergarten all the way up through eighth grade. Our goal in our classroom is to teach students strategies so that they can be proficient readers both in and outside of our classroom.
My Project
We are requesting nonfiction picture books and resources. These materials will help our students with their nonfiction comprehension skills. These skills will help them in their future classes and their future lives outside of school. According to the Common Core State Standards (2010), by the twelfth grade, students should be reading 30% fiction and 70% nonfiction texts. We would like to prepare our students for this through the use of these materials.
These books will change our students' reading lives.
Our students will be exposed to newer and more interesting texts that will take them to different places in different times all over the world. These experiences can't happen everyday without the use of a great book!
