My school is located in one of the lower income areas of my city. About 51% students receive free or reduced price lunch. 32% of the students are Caucasian, 49% are African American, and the remaining percentage are a multitude of ethnicities from all over the world.
The majority of my students don't have a big selection of books at home.
Thankfully, many take advantage of our beautiful public libraries, our school library, and our classroom library.
My students love reading. They read anything and everything I offer in my class library, as well as materials available in the school library. Magazines and science related non-fiction books are huge favorites right now.
These kids have the potential to be anything they want to be. It just takes time to get them to believe it for themselves. Books can open their world up to places they've never even dreamed of, and further build their love of reading.
My Project
My students love to read, but they have read most of the books in my small classroom library. My class this year, as in past years, seems particularly fascinated with non-fiction books and magazines. I hope that by adding in some exciting non-fiction books, similar realistic fiction books, and a little fantasy, that their imaginations can soar.
These books will help to increase my students' reading comprehension, and fluency when reading aloud.
For a few of my reluctant readers, I chose books that I believe will excite and hold their interest. I also chose books along a variety of reading levels so that everyone can find a book that is just right for them to read and enjoy.
