Help me give my students access to books. Books they can see themselves in, books they can relate to and books they can pick up to forget about the world around them if even for a moment.
My school is a daily hub of activity from teachers to students to parents. We are located in South Carolina in one of the fastest growing communities in our state. I am fortunate enough to have a unique role in which I teach students in grades three to five; therefore, impacting as many as forty-five students per year.
As a district, we believe in the motto "Children First Everyday".
With this motto in mind, I believe it's my responsibility to look for ways to support my students in their learning. My students work hard and play harder. They read, write, engage, collaborate and think critically. They are ready to accept any challenge presented and so am I.
My Project
Books! I can always remember the feeling I got as a kid when a teacher handed me a new book to read. The crack of the spine and the smell of the pages. I couldn't wait to dive in.
My students are constantly looking for stories and for characters like them.
It's important our children have an escape and have opportunities to relate to characters in books. When children connect to books, engagement is higher and the likelihood of them falling in love with reading soars.
I want my students to enjoy reading. I want my students to have the power to choose. With this choice comes my responsibility to provide access to high quality literature. Providing them with a wide variety of books will do just that.
