Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a small, rural community that isn't very culturally diverse. We are in a high poverty, low-income district that is an hour away from a "big city". Many of my students have never left our small town and have families with no way to transport them outside of our community. My students rarely have the chance to experience different cultures in our small community... except in our classroom! We have a great learning environment and students are interested in learning more about cultures from Spanish speaking countries.
My Project
These books will continue to bring other cultures to my students' lives. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy - I started a Free Voluntary Reading program last year and 98% of students polled (in an anonymous poll) said reading in Spanish helped improve their vocabulary and allowed them insights into the Latin American cultures. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind, with several different genres that allow every student to find SOMETHING they will enjoy during independent reading time.
With these new books, I am giving students more of a choice from which to choose during their independent reading time.
They will also be able to choose any book; I do not monitor them. I believe that simply reading anything in Spanish will help improve their fluency and help enrich their experiences with the Latino culture. Many of the books will also allow students to see how other cultures live and foster a sense of compassion in my students.
