Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One of the biggest factors contributing to the achievement gap among students, especially in poverty stricken areas, is not having exposure or access to literature. These students need the opportunity to read about the world around them, as well as have access to books at their level.
The 30 students in my class are hardworking and capable.
Despite my students' strong desire to succeed, over half of the students in my class are two or more grade levels behind in reading. Many of my students come from poverty stricken homes and are English language learners. It is imperative that the gaps in their reading skills are filled now, in 4th grade, before they give up. These students need books to learn the skills needed to read higher level texts.
My Project
Students will work in small groups reading these leveled books. They will be able to practice all the skills necessary to become life long readers on books at their level. They will work with me at the back table to develop skills such as summarizing, drawing conclusions, finding evidence in the text to support the theme and many more vital skills. This resource will allow them to read about a wide range of real-world topics and themes that kids are excited to read about.
Once a child feels confident and motivated, they are much more likely to be successful in school.
The leveled books will give students the opportunity to transport themselves into high interest books and become more strategic readers. They can take them home and share them with their families. We will have vibrant discussions in class to help with language development. These students will see how amazing reading is and strive to advance to more challenging levels.
