I teach twenty-five 8-10 year-old children, all of whom come from varying ethnic, intellectual, and emotional backgrounds. I teach in a Title I school in a rural district just outside of a suburban area in South Carolina. As such, many of my students are well-versed in being respectful and polite in keeping with the southern hospitality so prevalent in the South.
While the majority of my students are even sweeter than the tea that is ubiquitous throughout the region, many of them come from rather destitute households.
Because of their backgrounds, many of them want to do well and be successful, but lack the motivation and know how.
My Project
These books have been specifically chosen for this age group and these students just LOVE to read. These books teach important life lessons about equality, justice, integrity, fairness, empathy, and many more important ideas. Living in a rural area in South Carolina really limits what the children are exposed to.
Sometimes, the only way to provide them exposure to the outside world is through books.
Not only do these books teach such important ideas, it encourages these students to be readers. They BEG to read the books that make the SC Book Nominee List each year, and I hope to have them stocked in my classroom for the first day of school!
