I teach in a diverse inner city school district in Connecticut. My students come from a variety of backgrounds- ethnic, socioeconomic, life experiences, and family composition. Our school serves students from kindergarten to grade five from a variety of neighborhoods. This year, I will be teaching third grade students whose families chose the remote learning option in our district. I will be teaching students from two different elementary schools in our district, and after speaking with the families of my students, I know that many chose the learn from home option due to their own health issues and to protect the health of their family members.
This school year is going to be a challenging one for our students, whether they are learning in person in the classroom, or learning from home, but I am determined to make the experience for my remote learners one they won't ever forget!
My Project
As a teacher of students who are exclusively doing distance learning, I know that access to books has been difficult for many of my students.
Each child in my class will receive three books during the mid-year pick up of materials (or sooner if available).
All three will be used a classroom reading materials but also will be enjoyed as independent reading books. These will help support the shorter mentor texts we have been using for learning a variety of reading strategies and skills. In addition, reading an entire chapter book is important for third graders.
This project will allow each of my students to read chapter books, as well as share reading experiences with a tangible book in their hands!
