Our student population is diverse. I strive every day to celebrate the rich cultures and a wide range of backgrounds at our school. No matter how different my students are, they are also the same in many ways because they all have their own personal struggles. I teach sophomore English, and I believe that each student deserves to see their uniqueness and strengths acknowledged.
Some of them have to deal with learning disabilities or behavior disorders that affect how they learn.
Many of them juggle jobs and schoolwork to make ends meet. Their family situations can range from currently in foster care, to two-parent households, to divorced/remarried parents, to a single mom or dad. But at the end of the day, all of my students need the same things: the love and compassion of a good teacher, and the knowledge that they are seen for who they truly are.
My Project
Books can be either a window to another person's life or mirrors to our own lives. These titles were selected because the characters struggle with a wide variety of obstacles.
A diverse collection of independent reading books helps capture the imagination and attention of my students.
By purchasing these books for my classroom, you are helping my students become stronger and more invested readers. Years from now, when they are looking back on their time in my classroom, I hope that they will think fondly on a book that they read in my classroom.
