Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has a diverse student body. We have 50% White and Hispanic students. 70% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunches. Students come from a variety of homes. We have mental health counselors on site. We also have a food pantry that students have access to if needed. The staff works hard to provide for each and every student.

I teach 9th grade at PHS.

So about 120 students come into my class during the school year.

My Project

Updating class novels is important to keep students interested in reading. Students love to have a choice.

Book clubs are a great way to read a variety of literature and facilitate great discussions.

We Need New Names and American Born Chinese will be used in a book club on multicultural literature. Uglies and Feed will be used in a book club on science fiction literature.

The graphic novel of Romeo and Juliet will be used as supplemental materials in our Shakespeare unit. Using graphic novels provide great visuals for students. This graphic novel does a great job of illustrating the story and adapts the language for easy understanding.
