In our district, we have a high number of students who qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch. Ours is a very diverse, rural population. My students come from backgrounds that may not be able to provide experiences that they need to develop social and emotional skills, higher-order thinking skills, or critical thinking opportunities.
My second grade students are energetic, inquisitive, and love to learn in a variety of ways including music, art, movement, technology, small group work, and hands-on activities.
Our classroom is a safe place to ask questions, to learn from our failures and mistakes, to sustain our love of learning, and to celebrate our differences.
My Project
Books are essential to all students learning to read! In 2nd grade, we are still learning to read and need lots of books to help us learn the basics of phonics. We are also very curious, and books help us to answer all of our "wh" questions. The books that we are requesting, are nonfiction and fiction stories that are of high interest to 2nd grade learners. When we can put interesting books into the hands of 2nd graders, they want to practice their reading skills, which essentially makes them a better reader!
Each week at school, we refill our book bins with new books, by the end of the year, the supply begins to run low and students are no longer able to find books of their interest.
With this project, students will be able to have more high interest books, which keeps them reading and learning.
Books fill our imagination and help us learn! Books are a way to transport us to new places. Books teach us about things we are curious about. Books build new curiosities. Books are so important to a 2nd grader, and all kids! Help us grow with new books!
