Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in Massachusetts, a city struggling with crime and drugs. Our students are from diverse background culturally, economically, and academically. Our students are also the innocent bystanders, often caught up unwillingly, in this struggle.
Our school is a K-8 Montessori-based school and the students move through the grades together, creating a solid, welcoming community.
The students form strong bonds across their cultural, economic, and social lines, forming a real family here. For some of my students this is the only true family they have, and as such the teachers work hard to provide not just the necessaries, but as many extras as we can. We want our students to have the best school experience possible, to be set up for success in life.
My Project
Our district has cut funding for our libraries and as a result, my students only go to the library once a week during certain terms of the year. There are some terms where they don't go to the library at all. Not only are they missing out on learning how to use the library as a resource, they lose the opportunity to check out reading material. A lot of our students only have access to books here at school. To compensate, I am trying to build our classroom library so it is diverse, relevant, and engaging. Help me give my students quality, engaging, relevant books for our classroom library.
One of the best ways to improve reading skills is to read!
Reading is a fundamental skill that a lot of students in low-income areas struggle with, be it lack of access or other factors that interfere with the development of reading skills. The least I can do as an English teacher is to have a really good library so my students have access and exposure to lots of books of all kinds.
