Help me give my students new and exciting book series like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and the I Survived Series so they can really jump into the story as well as learn!
I teach in a rural, public elementary school with 400 students, grades 4K-6. Many students choose to participate in sports, Destination Imagination, music, and band. By grade five, there are less teachers which leads to a larger class size. With this being said, I need to have a wide variety of materials so that all students are able to succeed no matter what project we are doing.
My students are sweet and full of potential, but the poverty level is high with a 52% free and reduced-price lunch population.
Nonetheless, my school tries very hard to afford all students the same opportunities, no matter what social or economic situation may exist in their lives. All students are offered free breakfast, and we have a peer mentoring program run by our high school students that attends to the primary students' socio-emotional needs which offers free supper as well.
Personally, I take time to get to know each child in my classroom as a whole person. My goal throughout the year is to understand their academic strengths and weaknesses as well as their character strengths and weakness. I love being their friend, teacher, and hopefully a role model.
My Project
First of all, I want to make reading enjoyable for all students. This can be done by having a variety of new and exciting books to choose from like The Mysterious Benedict Society. I want students to be able to really get into the the series and be able to make sure they can go from beginning to end of the story.
There are a bunch of times when students find a book they thoroughly enjoy and ask if there's a second one, which usually there isn't.
This gives them the opportunity to continue the reading they thrive for.
I want to be able to give them that second, third, and fourth book in the series. In the end, I hope more students will become hooked on reading!
