This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a first grade teacher in a high-need school in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. As I have made my way through the school year, it has become very clear to me that there are some glaring holes in my classroom library. Some of the books that are missing from my classroom are key to my teaching and modeling for students, while others are needed for students' own independent reading.
I see my central responsibility as a lower-elementary educator to instill a life-long love of reading in my students. With an expanded library, I feel I could provide my students with more opportunities to read books that both excite and engage them. Furthermore, if I had more books in my library, I would be able to send books home with my students who do not have access to grade-level reading materials in their homes.
My students are extremely curious about the world around them. As I have seen them transform from non-readers into readers over the course of this year, I have seen evidence that reading is a fulfilling and infinitely exciting outlet for growing and inquisitive minds. Having more books to expand my library would help me to do my job: create a room full of inquisitive, questioning minds, ready to take on the life-long journey of being a reader.
