Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The children I teach are all extremely bright students in Dallas ISD. I teach 7th and 8th grade Pre-AP students, many of whom are gifted and talented. Although many of them come from low income families, they thrive in the classroom and have set high expectations for themselves; they strive to rise to those expectations and never fail to set the bar higher. A lot of them love reading, and the rest of them...well, I’m hoping to instill a love of reading in them by putting good books in their hands.
My Project
I am having a hard time making students accountable for reading, and making students all read the same novel turns them off to reading if they don’t like the novel I choose for them.
Student choice has been shown to have the greatest influence on students actually enjoying and participating in reading.
I am hoping that these nonfiction books, which I will use in an upcoming nonfiction unit study in the style of a book club, will allow the students to have more choice in the books they read, while still being expected to be held accountable for their reading.
Selected titles include “Taking Flight,” “A Long Walk to Water,” and “Outcasts United.” My hope is that through exposure to different nonfiction texts, students will gain an understanding different cultures and experiences from around the world and be able to have dialogue with each other about what they are learning in their daily reading that is interesting, troubling, and inspiring.
