Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students make up the third grade ICT (Integrated Co-Teaching) - special education class in an inner-city community school in a low income area of New York City.

40% of the children in my class are SWDs (Students with Disabilities) and over 80% are ELLs (English Language Learners).

Almost 90% of the students in my school receive free breakfast and lunch due to their low-income background. However, their hardships outside of the classroom do not hinder their desire or passion for learning.

My students are an amazing group of resilient children who deserve the very best education. These children truly love school - they are inquisitive, creative, and very enthusiastic. They live for experiencing and exploring new things every day. They absolutely love being read to and reading on their own and many are approaching grade level while some are even reading above grade level. My students have grown so much since the beginning of the year and I'm looking forward to watching this hard working group of students grow even more over the next few months!

My Project

My students need exciting accessible books for struggling readers. Books for emergent readers are often boring and don't spark interest for those children who already find reading unappealing. There are many new and exciting book series that feature popular characters that children love like Diary of a Whimpy Kid, Timmy Failure, and Dork Diaries.

My students gravitate more towards books that have graphic novel set ups with interesting illustrations which gets them reading more often.

I have many low level readers in my class that often don't get the opportunity to practice their reading and learning outside of the classroom because of lack of books that interest them or are on their level as well a lack of support at home. The library in my classroom is limited and I've noticed that many of my students have plateaued on their reading levels. It is hard to come up with a variety of high interest books on lower levels due to availability within our curriculum and lack of funding and resources. In addition, I have students who are reading above a 3rd grade level and they need higher level books to continue to push them academically. I have scavenged the internet and put together a list of books tailored to my student population! This project will bring that list to life in our library.
