My Students
My sweet, sweet students love to write! They love to play pretend and they love to learn.
My school has over twenty-five countries represented in it.
My school is also a Title I school and 47% of our population is English Language Learners. My students live in neighborhoods where poverty and crime are the norm. My students face numerous struggles each day. They come from families that are not always able to provide supplies or academic assistance.
Given all of the challenges my students face each day, my hardworking second grade class comes to school every day with a smile on their faces and love of learning in their hearts. It is very simple; my students love school. School is their safe place. It is more than just the place where they come to learn. It is the place where they are loved! In many ways, my students are typical second graders. They are full of wonder, joy, and laughter. They love books, puzzles, and markers. Life is not always easy for these kiddos, but they have learned that hard work and perseverance pays off. It is an honor to be their teacher.
My Project
Over half of students are reading below grade level. Most of my students come from low income families. They have not been read, been taken many places and sometimes even talked to at home. This causes my students to not have a lot of background knowledge (schema).
Literacy give my students the background knowledge they need to become productive and knowledgeable citizens.
Not having a lot of background knowledge makes it difficult to learn to read. My students are learning new words and learning how to read the words. They are not able to make a connection between the pictures on pages and the words on the pages. These books, including Stone Soup and Where the Sidewalk Ends, will bring knowledge in so many ways to my students.
