I am a librarian in a public K-12 school in rural Northwest Arkansas with approximately 200 students. 83% of our students receive free/reduced lunches. The bulk of library funding comes through Federal Title VI dollars which seem to get cut every year. The only other funding that the library receives comes from working with the School Mall program and hosting Scholastic Bookfairs.
When students are reading books that they truly enjoy, their reading skills increase.
Our school library is committed to building lifelong readers and learners. We work to instill a desire to read. Our students need to increase their vocabulary and comprehension to be able to effectively communicate. Reading allows children to use their imagination, create a worldview and look out through the eyes of others. Strong school library programs have been shown to increase student achievement and positively affect the lives of students.
My Project
Our high school students generally do not like to read, therefore have low reading levels. Many of the books that we have for high school students are outdated. We hope by purchasing new popular series books and books by popular authors, that students will be enticed to read more, therefore improving their reading abilities. Proceeds from this project will be used to purchase books in the Soul Guardians series, the Boyfriend series, and the Book of Dust series. Additional books by popular authors, Kasie West and Sarah Dessen will be purchased, as well as westerns and cowboy books for the boys.
