My students need multiple copies of books that we can read together as a class. We have a couple of class sets that we share with the other classes, and they are getting worn out.
My school district is in SE Iowa. Most teachers are only given a budget of $100-$150 to use for supplies each year. Our students mainly fall in the range of low SES. They don't always have the supplies they need to be successful in school, so teachers end up buying basics to support them with the money rather than curriculum materials to support and extend what we teach. With having an over 50% free and reduced rate in our building, asking for help and donations from parents really isn't an option.
The student population in our district is fairly mobile.
We are in the corner of the state, so many students come and go across state lines. This leaves teachers working very hard to keep up with students' needs. Students deserve every opportunity I can give to them to help prepare them for the future.
My Project
Every 5 weeks or so, we like to do a chapter book together. It makes getting into those books a little less intimidating when the class is doing it together. The problem is we have a very limited supply of class sets of books. We share the ones we do have with other classrooms, and even other grade levels at times. This is resulting in books being very worn out. We need a new supply.
I would love to gain some new titles to share with my students and colleagues.
I try to include different grade levels each cycle. That way when we share a book together, all students may participate confidently and learn to love reading. It helps to alleviate some of the struggle when you are able to share what you are doing and reading with someone else.
