My students need a set of highly-engaging books to improve literacy and teach social skills, including the Pigeon books and Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willems.
I love seeing my students get excited about reading! This year, I want to make sure they have access to highly engaging materials so that they fall in love with books forever.
I work with a very special group 3rd-5th graders with learning challenges.
Many of them have Autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities.
My classroom is a place where we focus on academic content, as well as personal, social, and emotional development, and communication and language.
My Project
By funding this project, you will provide my students with access to their favorite book series. These books, written by Mo Willems, will be used to teach important literacy skills, as well as vital social lessons such as waiting your turn and how to help your friends.
The "Elephant and Piggie" books are written in a highly engaging comic style. My students' eyes light up when they pick up these entertaining books. They read them to each other; they read them to their parents. Their excitement is inspiring!
"A book, being a physical object, engenders a certain respect.
Because you cannot turn a book off, because you have to hold it in your hands, because a book sits there, waiting for you, whether you think you want it or not, because of all these things, a book is a friend. It's not just the content, but the physical being of a book that is there for you always and unconditionally." Mo Willems
Thank you and I hope you'll consider helping my students with the gift of books!
