My students need class sets of Number the Stars and The Giver to teach literacy. These are books that 6th graders really enjoy and they meet the core.
This project expired on September 18, 2014.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
My students are great leaders who love to learn how other children their age have conquered difficult situations - just like the characters in these books.
My students come from an inner city school where over 80% are on free or reduced lunch.
The students face many personal struggles at home but come to school excited to conquer the tasks placed before them. Our goal as a school is to teach them to be leaders at school and in the community and we love seeing and celebrating their success.
My students crave good literature, especially the books with characters they relate to. I will use Number the Stars and The Giver to teach necessary literacy skills but more importantly the students can learn positive leadership characteristics from the characters. The students love to see the success of these characters and how much they truly resemble themselves.
The donations and the books will help improve the literacy in my class as well as give students examples of children their age who overcame diversity in their own lives, just as many of my students must do on a daily basis.
