Many of my students are discovering that they really enjoy reading about "true stories" just as much as they enjoy fiction. Most of the book available in our classroom are fiction, and it's important that there are books on topics available to spark their interest.
We are in a semi-suburban, semi-rural area and are a Title 1 school.
Because of this, many of our students don't have frequent access to books or technology at home. It's extremely important to have materials available at school to improve vocabulary and reading comprehension.
My Project
Books in our classroom library are available for students to check out whenever they would like. If books are nearby, I've found some students are more likely to read and "get involved" in a book, than if they have to get one from a school library or from home.
These books will give my students access to great non-fiction reading which will improve their skills with non-fiction reading, as well as comprehension, fluency and vocabulary.
With the shift in our state to Common Core standards and the emphasis on non-fiction reading materials, our students need lots of exposure to this type of reading.
