My students need a greater selection of books at their reading level so they can continue to learn and get better at reading. Their excitement for new books says it all.
I am the reading teacher for 90 5th grade students. We have started a reading program that is focused on students reading a wide selection of books. Students come in hungry for books and it inspires me to try and build the class library so they can sate their hunger.
My students are fifth grades that many come from at risk homes.
The school is 70% free and reduced price lunch. We also serve a very large population of homeless children who move in and out frequently. I try to make the most of the time spent with students, because I never know how long they will be in my school. If I can help these students understand how interesting and liberating reading is, then maybe they can carry that with them to whatever school they attend next.
My Project
These books are for the express purpose of expanding my in class library. I teach 90 students throughout the day as 3 classes rotate through. We have started a new program that includes a 50 minute block of independent reading time. Out of a 90 minute period, the focus is on students being able to read books on there level that they choose. When they are done, they take a comprehension test and only get credit if they score a 90% or better. This program hinges on whether or not I have enough selection for them to pick from. After 4 months of 50 minutes a day of reading, students are starting to run out of options. Many of my students started the year significantly below grade level. The books selected will help transition them from below grade level to being on grade level.
Please help me continue the momentum that my 5th grade students have built up by helping to provide a greater selection of books.
I have seen very low readers who have struggled every year with reading evolving into solid readers who take pride in their reading. If we can keep the momentum going and help to build a lifelong love of reading, the students' lives will forever be changed for the better.
