My students need books that capture their attention and keep them interested in reading. They also need scissors and construction paper to make their reading come to life.
A typical day in my special education classroom somewhat resembles a happy, crazy circus. Even with a smaller class size I see all types of personalities and disorders. My students do not have confidence in their reading and I aim to change that!
Students at our high school are very diverse but at the same time, due to recent events in our town, very close.
My students come from mostly two parent homes with parents that are an active part in their education. These kids keep me on my toes everyday and also keep me laughing which I think is the best part. Many of them have been in "lab" classes for the majority of their education due to various disabilities; I try not to modify my classes too much and push my students to take their reading and social skills to the next level. My ultimate goal for my students is that they will one day be able to take general education classes with minimal accommodations.
My Project
There are few resources (books) at this school for students on a lower reading level that they haven't already read or that interest them. The book set that I have selected will hopefully grab the students' interest.
I don't like my students to read and answer questions every day because it is boring for myself and them. Instead we add different art projects in addition to writing; whether they are cutting out pictures from a magazine and making a collage or drawing a picture of what they picture the main character looks like based off of how the author describes them. I currently have two small pairs of scissors available for the class to use so any extra would be extremely helpful.
These supplies will better my classroom because they get just as excited about new supplies as I do!
The students appreciated the last two sets of books we received from DonorsChoose and it shows them that people out side of their "bubble" cares about their education. My hope is that these supplies will continue to assist my students in improving their reading skills.
