My students need first grade Accelerated Reader books for our classroom library. We need readers for students who read above grade level and books for listening center.
My goal is that all of my first grade students will learn to enjoy reading and develop into life-long readers. Unfortunately, our school does not have a school library. My biggest challenge is developing a voracious reading appetite when there is so little reading material to satisfy my students.
My students are first graders and their world is new, exciting, fun, hands-on, and meaningful.
My class loves to learn new things through reading books. Our school is brand new and doesn't have enough money to fund a school library. My solution is to build our classroom library and I have already provided books which I have purchased and collected over my years as a teacher. However, my personal library is merely a good start. I request help to purchase more books for our classroom so we have sufficient reading material.
Our school is involved with the Accelerated Reading Program, a computerized program that tests reading comprehension. In order to fully participate in this program, we need books at numerous reading levels. For each book students read, they take an independent comprehension test on the computer. Students improve reading and comprehension as they progress through the program. More books in our classroom library will assist us in using this powerful tool.
My Project
As we increase the amount of reading materials in our classroom, my students will be able to have a wide range of "good fit" books for them to choose from. A "good fit" book is one that the reader enjoys which can be read with a high level of accuracy, fluency and comprehension. Reading "good fit" books is essential if students are to progress in their reading. There are many different reading levels in my classroom and so providing them with more books will increase their enjoyment of reading and help them to be successful readers. I have also requested high level readers for students who are reading above grade level. These popular chapter books will both challenge and entertain my students. They will expand their vocabularies, develop their imaginations, and of course, improve their reading skills. We will be able to fully participate in the Accelerated Reading Program offered at our school. My goal is for my students to find enjoyment in reading that will last a lifetime.
The love of reading and development of reading skills have proved to be the foundation for academic success.
By focusing on reading early, my project will not only help my first graders this year, but it will lay the groundwork for their success for many years to come. The more contact children have with books, the better readers they become. Increasing the amount and variety of reading materials will inspire my students to fully use the Accelerated Reading Program and to reach their potential.
