Do you remember what it was like to read a book that you couldn't put down? My students love to read but don't have the resources to find books that capture their imagination and encourage their passion for reading.
At a high needs school in Brooklyn, my students face an unimaginable range of challenges on a daily basis.
One thing that is constant in their life is school. Each day, these students come to class and try their best, despite any obstacles they may face.
It is hard to get students excited about reading when they are faced with dusty, well-loved, vintage titles. We need contemporary, high interest books that students can relate to.
My Project
To help foster their love of learning, I am looking to get high interest books in our classroom. These are books that are being turned into movies, such as "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent," as well as classics like "The Catcher In the Rye" and "To Kill a Mockingbird." Students will have copies of books to take home and read, and then come back to class and discuss with their peers. These are skills that not only encourage good reading habits but skills needed for high school and college.
