Each year a new set of students enters my classroom ready to read and learn and though I search for great books at yard sales and check books out from the library it is not the same as having our own classroom library that they can go to and find their favorite picks.
I teach at a Title 1 school in Florida where over 80% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch.
You wouldn't know it walking into the classroom but these kids don't have much more that what the school can provide. Because we want our students to do the best they can our school has all these wonderful competitions and activities where students earn charms and awards just for reading, something the love to do anyways.
My Project
I am requesting some books that are part of the Sunshine State Young Readers book list so that they can participate in more that one of our schools fun and exciting activities. I'm also asking for some more literature to help teach some of the third grade math concepts we cover. My students usually groan when I tell them that reading is over its time for math, I want to pull reading into math so they can see how wonderful both reading and math can be.
My 18 students need more books to read!
We do not have our own classroom library and are constantly begging for books from other classrooms and trying to get books from the school library. Please help us raise enough funds that we can have some of our own books to read that we don't have to hurry to get through so we can give them back. We really need these books so we can start our own class library.
