This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are curious and excited about learning to read. Over the past few years, I have worked hard to improve my understanding of how to best teach reading to reach all young learners. Although I have always purchased leveled readers and other books to teach my students, I still would like to increase the number of A-D readers that are available to my students. I have found through training and observation that my students need to have access to as many books as possible throughout the school year. They are so excited about decoding new words and accessing new information.

My students would use these materials during guided reading and their independent reading block.

They will also be able to choose to read the books at other times during the day. First graders are so excited about using strategies that they have learned to decode words. These books are perfect to support emergent readers. The leveled readers would be used with students as part of their classroom learning, then checked out to students/families so that the students could read them/share them at home.

My current students, and future students, would benefit greatly from the addition of these books to our classroom library.

Although I do try to purchase materials for my classroom on my own and acquire them through other avenues, it would take a long time to be able to purchase these resources. Books are everything to these young readers. They open the door to so many new things and ideas. Not only will these books help students to become better readers, but they will also introduce them to new concepts and ideas. How amazing for their young minds!
