My Students

My students come to school every day (with 98.4% attendance) in a diverse, low-income, urban community. The demographics of my school include Asian, African American, Latino, and Caucasian students. One goal, as a school community, is to focus on the whole child.

My classroom is dedicated to tolerance and humanitarianism.

I focus my lessons on the human experience to instill empathy into my students in hopes of creating a better world for their generation and the generations to come.

We utilize a vast range of texts, sources, and technology that is available to further understand our world and the responsibilities of a citizen of the United States. I want my students to continue to ask deeper questions about their world, analyze perspectives of others, and be able to support their ideas with evidence.

My Project

We have been working diligently this year to create a student library in the classroom full of books and graphic novels that students want to read. Based on their preferences and their feedback, I have created this project to help get more books and series that I know students are interested in reading. Every week in class we have 20 minutes of DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) and students look forward to this time each week where they can read a book of their choosing.

Providing space and time for students to read is the best method to create lifelong readers.

Though my students have been gaining momentum with this desire to read, there aren't enough books for the 110+ students. With these books, I can guarantee that all students will have access to books that they want to read and continue to instill a love of reading to my students.
