Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Title I public school, we are prepared to welcome and embrace every kid from all walks of life. My students come from a very wide range of situations. Some have healthy happy childhoods, and others have found a safe place within our school community. No matter where they are coming from, all of these students grow their passion for learning and being more successful within our walls.
Like all classrooms, in our community we have a wide variety of special needs and learning abilities.
The unique thing about our group of students is that we focus on growing and supporting the whole child and not limiting our job to just their education. In our class, students are learning about social and emotional life skills, and how to prepare themselves to have a job in 5-10 years, as well as all the necessary 4th grade curriculums! It's an amazing place for these incredible little minds to grow and thrive in a safe and welcoming environment.
My Project
As a first year teacher, I have been investigating different ways to spark my 4th graders love of reading! We have tried digital books, read alouds, listening to books on tape, and many more different ideas. I have found that the only way to develop a passion for literature is to find topics that they can relate to, and connect with, as well as be interested in the story! In our classroom we have a wide variety of developing readers at many different levels and interest areas and it is my job to promote the interests and passions of ALL students at ALL different reading capabilities!
Reading should be an exciting, adventure filled with wondering, curiosity, suspense, and joy!
I want to provide this kind of experience by giving my students access to book series like; A Series of Unfortunate Events, Captain Underpants (for all those awesome boys obsessed with this humor!), Percy Jackson, Magic TreeHouse, I Survived..., and many more titles! These authors have found ways to bring kids out of their reality and pull them into a story that lets them dream and be the heroes of their imagination! Thank you for supporting this project and putting literature into schools and the hands of amazing and curious kids!
