Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the privilege of educating 24 eager and bright young 1st grade minds. My students are from a diverse inner-city school which qualifies as Title 1 school because 100% of student population qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program.
As you can imagine the transition to distance learning has been difficult, but more importantly it has taken a tremendous toll on my students because most rely on our school for their meals and school supplies.
Due to our current pandemic, we have resorted to distant learning from our homes, but unfortunately many of my students have little resources to continue their academic progress from home.
My Project
Before the pandemic my 1st graders were on their way to becoming avid readers! They enjoyed reading just about everything! They loved to read Piggie and Elephant, Who is series, and Dr. Seuss books. From our virtual meetings, I've learned they are yearning for more books to read while they are learning from home.
Unfortunately, the opportunity to read a multitude of books is not in my students reach!
With schools and libraries closed, my students lack even the technology to access books online. My student families are struggling to provide access to books for my students while balancing their own work and mental health. The sincere effort and love being put forth by their families is heartwarming. We all miss each other and miss going to our school. My 1st graders are working hard alongside their families and teachers as we try to navigate this unknown world of distance learning.
