My students live in a diverse, high poverty community of central New Jersey. We are a Title I school. Many of the students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. A lot of them face issues at home, broken homes, or parents who work many hours just to pay the bills. With all the challenges they have, they still come to school with excitement and ready to learn. They love reading and learning about new things. I try to make my classroom a safe, warm, nurturing environment for the students to have the best chance at success.
My Project
My kindergarten students need books they can read in the classroom, and can bring home to read with their family. These grade appropriate reading materials will be perfect to build a classroom library for students to choose the book that interests them to read independently, or with their family.
An environment which is print rich will help my students develop a love for reading at this early, critical age in their educational development.
The more choices they have, the more they will develop a lifelong love for reading. It is during these foundational years that teachers and families can instill these important goals if the material is available. Help me give my students more books to choose from, so they can begin their love for a reading journey.
