In our classroom community, our students' identities and needs are shared, honored and appreciated.
Our elementary school is a bilingual immersion magnet academy in metropolitan Portland, Oregon.
Approximately half the students come from Spanish-speaking homes and half from English-speaking homes. About 50 percent of the students are low-income, qualifying for the federal free and reduced-price lunch program. All of the kids are bused to school from around the district. Besides bilingualism, a major goal of the program is to promote intercultural understanding among the students. When students hear the stories of their peers they develop sensitivity and begin to see the commonalities in all our lives.
My Project
Help our classroom library grow. Having access to a wide variety of books will promote students' interest in reading and engagement. Students will also be able to select books that relate to their interest and those that meet them at their reading levels.
We currently have a short supply of books in the classroom.
Because we are a bilingual classroom, it is important for students to have equal access to a variety of books in both English and Spanish.
With your support, my class will have a plethora of books to choose from, which I hope this will create a frenzy that will keep them wanting to read the next book in the series and boost their confidence as readers.
