I teach in a substantially separate K/1 ASD classroom. My students really benefit from different sensory materials to help better regulate themselves throughout the day. They love to color, look at books, listening to music, and enjoy movement breaks. Every one of my students is unique in their own way - no day is ever the same. They always try their best, and are learning each day. They continue to grow every day, and know how to always be themselves. They always put a smile on my face.
My Project
Currently, I do not have a classroom library. I do have some books in the classroom that just sit on a self, but they have no interest in them. I have a set of stairs in the classroom that I would LOVE to turn into a little library area. My students would have their own area to sit, enjoy the books, and find a story that really interests them. This classroom library will help create a print-rich environment, and give them a little independence. Having this classroom library will also give them that regulation - something they need to calm themselves down. It gives them that break they need.
