My students need books! They are always looking for the latest new releases and the rest of the series. Their friends tell them about a book, and they come running to see if I have it.
Oceania, Ancient Greece, Rome, England, London, New York, New Hampshire, and Prague...these are the places my students read about in my English class. However, there's so much more to the world than we read and experience in our very small town in Georgia. Their travel opportunities may be limited in our small town, but with books they can experience the best and worst the world can offer them.
My students are diverse, active, funny, thoughtful, engaged, and dedicated.
We are from a very small town without a lot of opportunities, but we have a great community of people who support all the endeavors of the school and its students. My sophomores read eight classroom novels a year, but many of them read on their own. I want all of them to read on their own, but I need books that appeal to them. I'm a die hard fan of the classics, but my students prefer modern stories. I want to take them on a reading journey to Camelot, Afghanistan, Germany, Hogwarts, California, Kentucky, and wherever else they may choose to visit.
My Project
What do they want? Books! When do they want them? Now! If they request it, I'm going to find a way to get what they want. My students are always requesting new works for the classroom; therefore, I'm constantly updating our shopping list.
Reluctant readers will pick up a graphic novel before they pick up anything else, so I need more!
These students find that they do enjoy reading. The pictures pull them in, but the story stays with them. If I can get them interested in a subject, author, or series, they usually continue that path. While we have a school library, my students prefer having the books in the classroom. One student commented that the classroom library made her feel like she was at home reading in her comfy chair.
