This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a low-income/high poverty school district; my students face several challenges in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges, I am thrilled to provide my students with quality learning experiences, ones that they will never forget.
When my first graders walk through my classroom door, some often come to school brimming over with enthusiasm and excitement for learning!
Their enthusiasm for school life can be exhausting but infectious and teaching them is an exciting and joyful experience!
My Project
In a recent article, Hefflin and Barksdale-Ladd (2001) discuss the importance of children relating to characters and situations found in books reflective of their own culture. Students need to be able to make connections between literature and their everyday lives.
Literature can provide children with a sense of affirmation about themselves and their culture (Colby & Lyon, 2004).
This ability to relate to characters and situations in books can be a major factor in book selection (Colby & Lyon, 2004). When children don’t find themselves reflected in books, they are less likely to be engaged in the reading process. I want my students to be engaged in the reading process; this is why my students need books that depict people that look like them--African-American.
These books celebrate diversity and will teach my students that it is okay to self-express, identify, and create their own definition of Blackness.
